You've discovered that you have this wonderful "gift" called adult ADHD. Is the future all doom and gloom? No, it isn't. Here are my tips for you.
> BE REALISTIC. Do not expect to change yourself overnight. It is a slow and gradual process, but it can be done.
> HANDLE THE STUMBLES. What matters is not how many times you fall but how many times you get up.
> TAKE MEDICATION. It takes time to figure out which medication is right for you, but, once you do, it will work wonders. Don't just take medication. Eat healthy food. Try omega-3s. Get lots of exercise.
> KEEP A DIARY. Jot down thoughts, feelings, events, triumphs, and failures. Review your list periodically to see where you have improved — and where you still need help.
> KNOW THAT ADHD IS A MOVING TARGET. You can get closer to controlling ADHD, but it's a sly son-of-a-gun, and it will outwit you. That's the nature of the beast.
> WORK WITH A THERAPIST OR A COACH. Your sessions will be more productive if the therapist or coach understands the underlying causes of your problems.
> LAUGH A LOT. When you walk from your kitchen to your bedroom and forget why you were going there, laugh it off.
> LEARN. REACH OUT. Learn how ADHD affects your life, join a support group, and concentrate on enjoying yourself.
