For an adult who's just been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), the desire to learn about ADD/ADHD and, often, to understand the whys and the what-nexts is immediate and intense. In the week following my diagnosis, I researched and read with abandon, poring over blogs, Googling the condition, and joining an online support group. What I needed was Adult ADD, an easy-to-read "first step" manual.

Author, fellow ADDer, and ADDitude contributor Stephanie Sarkis lays out the nuts and bolts of diagnosis and treatment, and shares simple solutions on everything from dealing with ADD/ADHD in the workplace to making lifestyle changes. In a chapter on getting support, Sarkis tells us how we can ask friends for help, even if we feel uncomfortable disclosing the diagnosis: "Consider just mentioning areas that you need support in, such as staying organized and cutting back on interruptions during a conversation."

The book is also a solid introduction to ADD/ADHD for family and friends, as well as adults who suspect they may have it.
