    Disability Perspective
My understanding of the Disability Perspective is that it frames disability as a category of difference that is imposed on people with differences by society because society is only designed to accomodate a narrow version of normal. In this context I think the idea is to accomodate your child's differences as much as possible while also teaching them strategies to deal with the barriers that people with disabilities have to deal with. I know with my son, I practice a combination of empowerment, accomodation, advocacy, and negotiation. The idea is not to pressure them to try to assimilate and be like nondisabled people, but to value their differences and figure out what supports them to be successful and work on that with them. At least that is my impression of it. Google "Disability Studies" for more information.
