Doing Away with School

Sometimes, the traditional route isn't what's best for your child. Here's how one mom made the decision.

Our best “school day strategy” has been to eliminate school in favor of independent study at home. I see no purpose in forcing my child to conform to an environment that is unsuited to his strengths and abilities. Instead, he follows his interests at his own pace — with no homework or test-related stress — and he soaks up information at an astonishing rate.

Joann's comments really hit home with me. My husband and I are at the same point for the same reasons. Our son is in sixth grade, and is failing most of his coursework. Holding him back isn't the answer. Neither is promoting him to 7th grade. It seems that the best answer may be the one behind door number three: homeschooling. I wish you all the best Joann! E-schooling/home schooling my soon to be 7th grader
I am currently on the cusp of deciding to pull our son out of public school and use the internet tools of e-schooling/home schooling him. Am afraid of doing the wrong thing, but am almost certain continuing the way we are IS the wrong thing. He has always been described by any teacher he's had as being EXTREMELY smart and yet, I look at test grades and standardized testing and report cards and wonder where is the disconnect? He complains of being bored and "hating" school but he loves to learn and is very inquisitive. I know that I cannot get this time back and that this is a crucial time in his education. Fortunately, my husband and I are on the same page with this decision. Short of going to school with him every day, I don't know what else to do. By the way, the school has been willing to try everything we can think of and everything they can think of to help with this. But as Alex says himself, ever during testing when the room is "quiet", there are "too many people" in the room and he cannot concentrate. He does phenomenally well with one-on-one teaching and in a public school setting, this is just not a resonable expectation. Thanks for hearing me out. Joann in Maine

I feel the same & I've been homeschooling my 11 y/o son for almost two years. He is much happier and works at his own pace - and he actually gets more done at home than he would at school. It seems to be a fine choice, if you can do it I want to encourage you!

I feel the same way. I want positive reinforcement. Also, "standardize testing" just sets up my child for negative reinforcement.
