For the past three years, my 10-year-old son has attended a YMCA day camp. This is not a specialized camp, but the wonderful staff understand the challenges of having a child with ADHD. The camp consists of fewer than 20 children in each age group, and this small setting works well for him.
We also take a one-week family vacation out of the city. My son likes being involved with the plans for the summer and having predictable events from year to year — our annual trip to the beach in August and his return to a favorite day camp. It takes planning, but it is worth it. The main thing is to keep children busy in a safe environment that will teach them skills they can use in their day-to-day lives.
