How to Manage Side Effects in Kids

Six common stimulant side effects and the strategies that can help alleviate them.

Side effects are common in kids who take stimulant medications. Here are six common side effects, along with the strategies that may help alleviate them.

1. Loss of appetite, weight loss

  • Record your child's weight in a medication log every 3 months.
  • Give stimulant medications at mealtimes, and offer high-calorie snacks, like ice cream, in-between meals.

2. Growth problems

  • Record your child's height in your medication log every six months.
  • Attempt weekend and vacation drug holidays.

3. Trouble falling asleep

  • Administer the stimulant earlier in the day.
  • Change to a short-acting form of the stimulant.

4. Dizziness

  • Have your child's blood pressure checked.
  • Increase your child's fluid intake.
  • Switch to an extended-release med, such as Adderall XR, Ritalin LA, or Concerta.

5. Irritability, sadness, moodiness, or agitation 1-2 hours after administering the medication.

  • Lower the dosage.
  • Have your child assessed for depression and other problems.

6. Sadness, irritability, or worsening of ADHD symptoms as the drug wears off.

  • Change to an extended-release form of the stimulant.
  • Overlap stimulant dosing, usually by 30 minutes.

    Finger Picking
My 8yr old son in on Vyvance. He started a year ago things went well. 6 months ago he started peeling the skin from his finger tips to the point he would bleed. He teacher would catch him in class doing the same thing needing to refocus him back to school work. I'm not sure what I can do to get him to stop.

    ADDERALL XR & SINUS ALLERGIES/INFECTIONS
Since my 5 yr old has been diagnosed with ADHD last December 2007, his Dr. put him on 10 mg of Adderall XR. Since he started with this medication, he has had numerous sinus infections, colds, ear infection, pink eye and developed a constant stuffy/runny nose. He is always sniffling, like someone just snorted cocaine and has a constant nose itch. He is very emotional and constantly needs my attention when he is home. He has become very sad at the end of the day. His teacher says he does fine most of the day, but still has some issues with the other kids teasing him a lot. He often tells me that no one likes him and that he has no friends. He has troulbe sleeping and wakes up extremely tired in the morning. His heart races too. When I give him an allergy medicine, his symptoms get worse, so I don't give him any others meds for his allergies and colds. It is heart breaking to see him suffer. He went from a happy toddler to a sad and sick 5 yr old since starting school and taking Adderall. His Dr. is referring him to a Allergy Dr. and to an ADHD clinic for Phys. evaluation. He never had any of these problems before he started school and meds. I tried taking him off the Adderall two weeks ago and he went persurk. He was in the principal's office for two days. She said if I did not put him back on the meds. that she was going to suspend him. I could not beleive it. Where is the compassion in the school system and teachers. They want these kids medicated to make their job easier. I put him back on the Adderall XR and is doing better in school. I feel I have to keep him on for another 9 weeks until school ends. He has come so far and been through so much emotionally and physcially, I hate to pull him out of Kindergarden now and failing and to repeat Kindergarden again next year. Which After going through this ordeal these past few months, I don't want to send him back to school. I am thinking of home schooling him, but don't know if I have the patience to teach an ADHD child. I just don't know what tolso was wondering if I should give him his meds over the weekends and for the week of spring break coming up in a couple of weeks. Are these symptoms related to taking the Adderall XR?

    re ritalin
My sons stuttering has increased, can ritalin be the cause of this. He did stutter (very little) before but know it is very noticeable.
