- Think about your interests. The more passionate you are about a job, the less likely it is that your symptoms will get in the way.
- Read about careers in the fields in which you're interested. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is a good place to start.
- Consider how you process information. Internal processors think quietly about a problem until a decision crystallizes—and so do better in jobs without a lot of teamwork. External processors like talking to other people before settling on a solution.
- Measure your work-speed. Sprinters like to take on a project, give it their all, and quickly move on to a new project. Plodders devote the same level of focus to each day, and don’t mind spending long periods of time working on the same project.
- Speak about a potential job with three or four people who are already doing that job. Do they think your strengths (such as the way you process information or your preferred work speed) are a good fit for the position?
- Observe the job for an hour, a day, a week—or take an internship or volunteer position—before accepting a full-time position.
