5 Keys for Improving Parent-School Communication

How to communicate better with your child's school.

  1. Be positive. Start the conversation with a compliment, and reframe the problem to make it easier to talk about solving it.

  2. Ask questions. Be specific (such as, "Does Matthew seem to behave worse in the mornings or in the afternoons?") and focus the discussion toward solutions.

  3. Use reflective listening. Repeat part of what the other person has said in your response.

  4. Stay on topic. Talk about your child, specific problems, and how they might be addressed.

  5. Work toward a solution. Compromise, and offer suggestions that everyone can live with.
