Try, Try Again

One mom praises her son for choosing math over recess.

My fourth-grader, Brendan, has struggled with math ever since it got beyond simple counting. After he failed a recent test, his teacher gave him the chance to retake it during recess. Brendan chose to stay inside to retake the test — and scored a perfect 100!

My husband and I praised him more for seizing the opportunity to retake the test than for his final score. It was a very proud moment for us.

I could relate very well to your story. My son is dyslexic and is now in 8th grade. In his elementary years he missed many recesses because he had to finish an assignment or a test. One day the teacher asked him if he was going to recess or stay in to review for a test. He said he was ready for the test and chose recess. The teacher e-mailed me telling me the story, wondering if he had made the wise choice. When I asked him about it, he said "Mom I had a choice, so I chose recess, I never usually get to choose, I have to stay in from recess." Wow did that give me perspective from a little boys eyes. And he did great on the test! The teacher and I both praised him that he knew he was ready for the test and he made a good choice! Sometimes LD kids don't have very many things at school they feel very victorious about, so we sure enjoy those small victories when we get them. My son made the Honor Roll for the first time last year and earned a cell phone he had been working all year to get!!!!! Cathy Pechin, Derby,Ks
