A Problem Professor

How to handle an unaccommodating professor — tactfully and patiently.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 32 and am looking forward to graduating from college this year.

All but one of my professors have been great with accommodations. After explaining to this professor that I have ADD, and am getting treatment and taking medication, he lectured me about how "young people" need to build character by overcoming distractions, instead of asking for "special help."

The professor's course was required for my major, so I stuck it out. But I asked the Office of Student Disabilities to flag the professor in their files.

    A Problem Professor
As a former Learning Specialist at a community college, I am floored at the number of educators, otherwise bright, who just don't "GET IT" - your comment does not surprise me. This professor is obviously in the dark ages where ADD is concerned. Good for you that you flagged him - it is his job to provide you with accommodations, not make a judgment on your condition. By the way, I know of someone else (highly educated) who thought ADD was a bunch of bunk -until he had two ADD kids of his own and witnessed the transformation in their behavior on medication! He is now a believer :)
