Baseball’s ADHD Epidemic

As many as eight percent of professional baseball players claim to have attention deficit disorder.

According to Major League Baseball’s Therapeutic Use Exemptions, eight percent of professional baseball players are taking medications for attention deficit disorder (ADHD). This is higher than the national rate of ADHD diagnosis in children, at 3 to 5 percent, and the rate of diagnosed adult ADHD at 1 to 3.5 percent.

ADHD Therapeutic use exemptions allow baseball player to take stimulant drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall to treat the medical conditions. Skeptics believe that players are using the exemption as an excuse to take banned performance enhancing drugs.
