Clonidine may be a safe, cheaper alternative for the treatment of children with ADHD, according to a new study from JIPMER Hospital in India, published in the April issue of the Journal of Tropical Pediatrics. Even though stimulants remain the treatment of choice, their high cost limits the usage of the drug, especially in developing countries. Researchers tested lower-cost clonidine with carbamazepine in children in India with ADHD, and found that the two drugs were comparable in controlling symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity. The research may lead to increased treatment of ADHD symptoms in children living in developing countries. Read more in the Journal of Tropical Pediatrics.
