The ADHD Eczema Connection
Children with the itchy skin rash eczema are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, a study says.
Wednesday February 18th - 11:09am
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, children with atopic eczema are 54% more likely to be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
The itching, sleep disturbances and general pain caused by eczema could exacerbate ADHD symptoms and make children more restless, researchers propose. The report also supports the theory that immune system function may be a factor in ADHD. The itchy skin rash often signals likelihood that the child has, or will develop, allergies. Suggesting that ADHD may be an allergic condition in some patients.
ADHD and eczema may share an underlying cause, but there is no definitive connection yet. Researchers go on to say that the link between eczema and ADHD requires further study.
