A study recently launched by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) will be among the first to attempt to find the causes and early warning signs of ADHD. The study is unique because it will have biological and environmental data for each child beginning before birth and extending through childhood.
The study will recruit participants from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, another study being conducted by NIPH. This study will provide the ADHD researchers with genetic information, including blood samples from both parents and the baby's umbilical cord, as well as environmental factors, such as prenatal care.
The study hopes to examine specific behaviors and developmental difficulties, and the various factors that could play a role in each. It is sponsored by several government agencies in Norway, including the Department of Health and Social Care. Because it is a longitudinal study, results may not be available for several years.
