In the wake of the decision by Canadian authorities to suspend sales of Adderall XR, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has advised physicians in the U.S. to continue to prescribe the drug - but to watch patients carefully. Academy president Richard M. Sarles, M.D., reiterated the need to take a thorough history of each patient, monitor patient health while using the medication, and discuss any risks with patients. Sarles said the academy agrees with the Food and Drug Administration's decision not to ban the sale of Adderall XR in the U.S. Canadian authorities acted after 12 children died suddenly while taking Adderall XR. |
