Common AD/HD Medication Safe with Bipolar Drug

Kids with both AD/HD and bipolar disorder may safely follow a treatment plan that combines amphetamines with Depakote.

Friday April 1st - 6:00pm

Children with both AD/HD and bipolar disorder can be safely and effectively treated with amphetamines for AD/HD after first receiving divalproex sodium (brand name, Depakote) to stabilize their moods. Researchers at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in Dallas found no unsafe interactions between the two drugs in a clinical study. The results, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, also showed that divalproex sodium alone did little to relieve symptoms of AD/HD.
